Embracing Diversity and Inclusivity: Who Can Participate?
The "Building Connections Derby" is an inclusive event that warmly welcomes individuals with various forms of disability. Our goal is to create an empowering and exciting experience where every participant can celebrate their abilities, learn new skills, and build connections in a supportive environment.
It's All About You!: Tailored Support
Our event is designed to be a personal achievement celebration, rather than a high-pressure competition. Whether you're here to enjoy the thrill of the ride, learn new skills, or make new friends, we're all about creating an environment where you feel supported and celebrated every step of the way.
No matter your level of experience or ability, our mentors will be right there with you, offering support that matches your comfort and capability. From direct lead-line assistance to independent completion of events, we personalize your experience to make it the best it can be!
Activities: What Can You Expect?
Participants will dive into a variety of engaging activities, from modified Gymkhana Games to learning Command Class (Simon Says) skills. Participants will be paired with youth from the Raymond 4H Horse Club who will work with the individuals at their pace to teach the different events featured in the July Show. Each month introduces a different aspect of equine care and competition, ensuring a well-rounded experience as you prepare for the big day. In addition to learning new skills, the program seeks to build connections between all participating youth and the youth from the 4H club. Each monthly session will wrap-up with snacks and a debriefing session.
The Derby Event: Showcase Your Skills
In July, showcase your newfound skills in our inclusive, high-energy modified horse show. Compete in events like Showmanship Class, Gymkhana Event, and Command Class, all while enjoying the support and cheers of your peers and mentors.
The Derby is more than just an event; it's a celebration of community, learning, and growth. Look forward to a BBQ, swag, and prizes that make the day even more special. Most importantly, the day is structured to be supportive with the youth mentors and coaches from the training sessions being present the whole time, ensuring that every participant leaves with a sense of accomplishment and lasting memories from a great day!
Safety and Support:
Your safety is our top priority. Rest assured that adult insured coaches from LTRA and 4H, led by the talented Jay & Amber Skoog, will be present at all classes and the derby itself to ensure a safe and supportive environment. Learning and event activities will occur at your pace, with your well-being in mind.
